Series 2 or Season 28 (or however you refer to it) of Doctor Who has come to a close. Why am I not terribly surprised that my take differs from every other I've read? Cut for spoilers and nitpicking. )

On a happier note ;), I saw Pirates of the Caribbean this morning. If you haven't heard/read it had a 132 million dollar weekend - a new record. It would help to explain how a 10am showing was 75% full. I'm still leaning to the first film as being better, but I enjoyed this one quite a bit. The effects were amazing, which is usually a given in film today, but the thing about the effects here is that they were part of the story, not detracting from it. Effects, action, character moments all flowed seamlessly together. Johnny I felt improved on his performance. There were subtler Captain Jack moments. And the sword fight (which I loved in the first film) was superior here. Totally unbelieveable of course, but it rocked technically. And kudos to Johnny's double for getting his mannerisms down. Cut for spoilery points. )

I'm seeing bits and pieces of info pop up around LJ from Jamie's Q&A at Shore Leave this weekend. He mentioned some spoilery stuff, nothing major (they really are clamping down!) and nothing I hadn't already heard accept for one tiny thing. Spoiler having to do with his physical appearance in Season 3 )

Now off to clean some more. I think I still have company coming this week. ;-)

I think I'm eagerly looking forward to the premieres of Stargate and, possibly, Atlantis which I a) either blame [info]danceswithwords for or b) my lack of enthusiasm over the current slate of new and returning shows. I've tried to fill the BSG/House void and it's not happening thus far. I do adore Rescue Me. I've been a fan of Dennis Leary since his MTV promos. I still recall his Sting rant about him trying to save the rain-forests when he can't even save his hair. Putting aside that he's just plain funny, he has a unique talent for making what, on paper, should be completely unlikable characters, likable, even redeeming. See The Ref and The Job for further proof.

I'm also enjoying The Closer which, like 'Rescue Me', benefits from a great lead and ensemble. Though I wouldn't mind if they dumped Jon Tenney as the boyfriend. I'm just not seeing the chemistry.

Now there's the long list of tried and failed to get my interest shows. Saved which, as many people have pointed out, is a pale imitation/rip off of 'Rescue Me'. What really is insulting to me about this series is the lead is a gambling addict, on the outs with his family, has no close relationships, is a med school drop out drifting through life, and gets the crap beaten out of him in the pilot, but he's happy! At least RM is honest about it's characters misery.

Hex. Did people really like this show? I barely paid attention to the two hour premiere (which could have easily been condensed to an hour) and managed to still follow the rather convoluted plot. The plot that seemed to be squeezed in when the supposed teens weren't talking about sex, watching sex, or having sex. Seriously, when a show makes that subject boring it has problems. Not to mention the very bland cast. I did watch one more ep before deciding three strikes and I'm out.

I've also been watching the Sharpe movies on BBC America. I've come to the conclusion I really don't like this era, at least in terms of military exploits depicted on film. With the 'Hornblower' films I have Jamie and Ioan and the ability to fill in the blanks. ;) Here, there is a lot more fighting and the constant reminder that women were beaten, raped, and murdered on a regular basis. At least the films depict the English to be as bad as the French. And they've made me feel really sorry for Spain.

The Dead Zone returned this weekend and while I know the apocalypse storyline is truer to the novel, I really miss the stand alone eps with Johnny helping folks. Not to mention, his attempts at connecting with his son.

And while I haven't been so high on Doctor Who recently (I'll skip discussion of 'The Satan Pit' since it didn't much hold my attention), my enthusiasm was renewed by this week's installment - Love and Monsters )

Absolutely gorgeous day here, but I committed to staying home and relaxing after another looooong week at work and running around doing errands yesterday. I opened all the windows to let the fresh air in and for the past hour I've been sitting outside watching 'Who' on my laptop. Thus far, the neighbors have refrained from making any comments as to me spending my weekends in a lawn chair one foot from my front door on a computer. Good thing, because I'm either writing 'adult fanfic' or watching illegally downloaded TV. And how cool is it that I can do both those things outside! :)

The Impossible Planet )

So no one worries, my time online will be curtailed from the 7th thru the 13th. I'm heading back to Seattle to meet up with [info]brynnmck, [info]sdwolfpup, [info]danceswithwords, and [info]shmarollynn. Then we shall head up tp BSG country (AKA Vancouver) for the weekend where I hope to see [info]pukajen again and meet [info]claudia_yvr in person for the first time. Of course, I'd like to meet certain actors while there, but I'm trying to remain realistic.

Now, I think I'll take another pass on my fanfic. See if I can actually have it finished before I leave. Then maybe work on lists for stuff I need to do and stuff I need to take with me. And since there seems to be nothing on tonight, I may pop in 'The Duchess and the Devil'.

I watched 'X-Men', the one that started it all, last night. I know my opinion of the 'The Last Stand' has been more positive than many people, but I think all three hold together fairly well as a trilogy. I can't wait until the DVD release to do a marathon.

Speaking of 'X', I have created a monster with my mother. I've lost count of how many phone calls I've received regarding her questions, theories and updates on box office totals. And she tries to argue her points with me. For example (non-spoilery version):

Mom: Maybe that was...
Me: No, it wasn't.
Mom: Why not?
Me: They don't have that power.
Mom: Are you sure?

Am *I* sure??? OK, maybe I don't want her to start watch 'Galactica' because things could get ugly.

Speaking of 'Galactica' (don't you love all the segues ;), I appear to be at the tweaking stage of my Lee/Laura Fixathon story. Which would put me, the great procrastinator, about three weeks ahead of schedule. It seems what inspires me most is fear. See, both me and my beta have vacations scheduled over the next three weeks, so it was get it done now or have a panic attack on June 16th.

This afternoon I *finally* cracked open my 'Hornblower' boxed set and watched the first two films, The Duel and The Fire Ships. Cut for length - I doubt this can count as spoilage at this point. )

If you noticed I did not post about this week's Doctor Who that should tell you something. Ok, I have a few things to say. )

Yes, I'm already looking forward to a long weekend.

May seems to be the month a lot of my LJ buddies were born in and I just can't keep up. Unless I wish to post everyday and, HA!, like that's going to happen. So a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to the delightful [info]treacle_a. Where's the talk of cake and presents? There's more to life than House woman! ;p

A brief mention of Sci-Fi's 'Who', but mostly about the latest ep of the new series. )

Went to Target yesterday and finally broke down and bought a flash drive. Not only did I get an excellent deal, I figured out how to use it right away. Here's where the balloon bursts. I took it in to work with me to transfer/print some documents and guess what? My computer is an antique and isn't reading the device. Sigh.

Ok, just a short time ago I saw a commercial for the new Fast and Furious film. Anyone remember little Lucas Black who starred in 'Sling Blade', 'The X-Files' movie, and 'American Gothic'? May I say WOW? I mean, he's no Bamber or Jackman, but color me impressed.

Since the title of the ep can be construed as spoilery, I'll just say thoughts on Ten's latest adventure. )

FYI, if any of you are planning on attending Dragon*Con the membership cost goes up $10 tomorrow.

My intent was to get up at a reasonable time this morning (I did), watch the latest 'Who' (I did - more on that in a minute), then sit down to write fic...here is where things go off the rails a bit. There was laundry to be done, a shower to be scrubbed, and my mother deciding to drop by. Of course, dropping by usually means she's here for at least a couple hours. And she was. And then I needed to eat and pretty soon writing by 11 turned into 4:30. Sigh. But write I did. Five pages and nearly three thousand words. Now many of those words shall need to be rewritten (trust me on that), but I did succeed in the goal to get started and get the basic idea down. Though, unfortunately, I decided to turn on the TV at eight to watch The West Wing (mistake) and it threw me off my rhythm. When I kept rewriting the same line over and over I decided it was time for a break. So Lee and Laura are left in the middle of having sex. ;)

And sekrit message to [info]k_julia - I think this could work as a prequel of sorts to that crack fic idea we discussed. Not sure if you want to hear more about it now or wait until the story is complete and tell me what you think. Most likely you’ll tell me it doesn’t belong and just edit the damn scene out. :p

Now, back to Doctor Who. Once again, I was thoroughly entertained. Ten is making the loooong wait until the return of BSG more bearable. Cut for spoilage, some of which Thegoyle I’m sure will appreciate. ;) )

I’m now under the belief that David Tennant can do for glasses what Jamie Bamber can do for a towel. Now for some less superficial thoughts on ‘School Reunion’… )

And a very Happy Birthday! to a fellow Michigander [info]thedeadlyhook. I hope your feeling better and up to doing a little celebrating today. ;-)

I find I really don't have anything to say about the episode that aired on Sci-Fi this past Friday...so I won't say anything. ;)

However, I do have a few comments on 'Tooth and Claw' that aired on the BBC last night. )

OK, this is going to be interesting watching both series simultaneously. Mostly because I get to try to keep track of who has seen what! And is it true that the new series isn't airing in Canada until the fall? I won't even hazard to guess when it will air here. I suppose it depends on how the last series is doing on Sci-Fi and I have no clue. Anyway, to avoid any spoiler drama I'm going to continue to do separate posts for the series. And in addition to putting the title in my cut, I should probably also point out which series it's from. So, 2.1: New Earth )
