Asta 2

Cool Money

I could do a long ranty post about how bad I thought this movie was. I don't blame James or any of the other actors. They tried. But, the script? Anyone reading this could have written a better script. Why was Bobby likeable? Because, in my experience it takes more than not murdering people to be likeable. Why could no one identify him even though he made no attempt to disguise himself? I don't care how well he flirts, someone takes my stuff I'm throwing his ass in jail. Why was every cop portrayed as being stupid? It was an insult to the NYPD. And what the hell time period were we in? One minute it seemed current, but the next his wife's hair, clothes, and furniture choices told me it was the 70's.

Good Lord James, get a new agent/manager/trained monkey.

BTW, is anyone else sick to death of the Hootie Burger King commercial? I can only stand seeing someone humiliated so much.
  • Current Mood: aggravated aggravated
In regards to his lack of disguise and the time period? Exact questions i asked out loud. My dad said present day, but it had a 70s feel to it most definitely. And the lack of disguise, when peole looked directly at him, yet couldn't/didn't want to identify him?

yes, it could've done better. However, i can't say this was such a horrible step for James.

Having seen 'Winding Roads' and 'The Mountain' I have to agree with that.

Liar. You love humiliation.
Only if it involves hot guys strutting around half naked. Not washed up singers strutting around in a cowboy outfit singing about a river of ranch dressing. :p
I didn't have to watch it through my hands while cringing convulsively, so it was okay by me! I have low standards. Seriously, though, I was doing something else while watching it and not paying enough attention to nitpick the plot or much of anything else. I thought the acting was pretty good--both JM and Margot Kidder, who I did not recognize for the first 1 1/2 hours.
I think Margot has had a little too much work done to her face. And I kept wondering if she's actually old enough to be his mother?

I didn't feel the need to heave things at the TV, but the plot holes were driving me batty (no vampire pun intended :p). Now, I think I'll go watch some 'Farscape' and cleanse the mind. :)
How many dozens of people saw him? And no one could produce a sketch of him for the police?

What's worse is they showed his mug shot to people and no one could identify him! Oh, yeah, their eyes were covered.....but after they got a look at him.
Cheesy production values IMO with modern day cars, etc. yet when you get to Bobby's new house it's classic 1970s. I used to know someone who had that scary copper thing on their living room walls. However I was mildly amused that Bobby's older accomplice was played by the man who is the unsucessful crook Mike on The Red Green Show.
Story didn't make an ounce of sense with nobody being able to recognize him and just because he gets his victims a glass of water we are supposed to like him.
Still, like everyone is saying a lot better than The Mountain, Chance and Winding Roads.

Cheesy is being generous. ;) Either they got the worst set designer in the world or no one gave a damn about continuity. The house was the like a neon sign to me telling me it was the 70s. But Booby's new car (which they drew our attention to) was a recent model and James was dressed in modern attire. Where were the polyster pants, wide ties, and plaid jackets???

Could not agree more. James was good, but the movie just bored and irritated me to no end, for all the reasons you cited. I agree that it won't hurt his career, though I think it looks much better on the resume to get good notices with good material (Buffy) than it does to get good notices with mediocre material. I keep wondering about the projects he turned down to tour with that damn band! Some of them had to be better than this.

Shallow note - I kept wishing he'd grow his hair out longer ;)

And I just saw that he added another Con/Concert appearance to his schedule. I give up caring if he's not going to.

Yeah, I agree about the hair. It needs to be a bit longer because I just don't feel he has the most flattering scalp.
Forgot about this movie, then remembered and tuned in about 15 minutes after it started. Watched about 5 minutes, thought JM looked good, laughed at joke about his age that was probably not designed to be a joke, realized it was one of those voice-over movies, realized I hate voice-over movies, realized I didn't care enough about James to watch a movie that already bored me, turned movie off, went to be at 8:30 p.m.

After reading your post I realize I probably made the right decision.

Hee. I picked up on the 'joke' about his age too. It's actually a little sad that that was so funny.

Voice overs, especially when they are as presesnt as they were, tend to annoy me to. Actually, I felt I was listening to him do a reading of the Harry Dresden books accept without the characterization and good dialogue. :p
Sunspotted, you totally did the right thing. I switched over to a Gilmore Girls rerun (oddly guest starring the guy that played Whistler in Buffy)at 8:30 pm. What the heck was wrong with me that I switched back at 9:00? Why did I not remember I was taping the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and tune in then? Apparently I had to have the evidence of my own eyes to see just how sucky this movie was. Thankfully, switching over after the movie cleansed my mind.

Asta, for every reason you stated and a few others, this was beyond bad. It isn't as bad as Winding Roads so I guess that's a positive, but then it's not saying much either. JM did what he could with the role. Margot Kidder, IMO, looked like she was in a different movie from her performance. Something more humorous...which might have been the only ting that got her through this crap.
Thank you for the vindication, I feel much better after a good sleep. Although, I'm kinda sad I didn't last until Margot Kidder showed up, cause the laughing might have relaxed me for sleep.

And why did I not know about the R&R Hall of Fame thingie? My memos are totally getting lost in the mail.
Oh I forgot. Have been spared the Hootie Burger King Commcerial. Don't know why, but apparently I've been lucky!
Considering that stupid commercial seems to be *everywhere* you'll be suffering along with the rest of us soon enough. :p
I ended up skipping it to watch the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame thing instead...so I'm glad to hear I didn't miss much, heh. ;) And yes, I HATE that damn Hootie commercial!! It's not only humiliating, it's creepy!!
Well, I'll admit I was interested in seeing James starring in a film *and* not playing Spike. The good news is, I was able to see him as someone other than Spike. The bad news, of course, was the film stank. You made a wise move. ;)
"BTW, is anyone else sick to death of the Hootie Burger King commercial? I can only stand seeing someone humiliated so much."

I don't know what bothers me more Hootie doing the commercial to earn a buck (or a free whopper) or the fact that they are singing it to a tune I love from O Brother where Art Thou? Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

At least the MC Hammer commercial he's making fun of himself. I think Hootie is clueless he's the butt of this joke.

Not that I formed any opinion on it...

Raoul
I am in complete and unequivocal agreement with everything you've said in this post. And that includes the part about Crystal scaring the hell out of you. ;)

I forgot to watch! *hangs head in shame* I really don't like him hairless, and I'm perplexed as to why he keeps it. Guess I'm shallow, but I miss Spike, not JM.(Or better: Spike&Buffy.) ;)

Gail
Oh no, *you* shouldn't be hanging your head in shame, it's the rest of us who keep hope alive. ;) As time has gone on I've realized I'm a Spike girl first and foremost. However, I do feel James is a good actor and worthy of some decent work. I just wish he'd put his damn rock star ambitions on the back burner and concentrate on his strength. It's pilot season. If NB, AA, DB, can get one, why can't James???
So I wasn't missing anything?! I only got a few scenes between ad breaks as I was watching something else.
