I thought this would be a straight drama and was pleasently surprised to find so much humor in the film. I won't get into details, but we live in era where information gathering is simple and nearly instentanious. It cracked me up to see the ways in which competitors gathered information about each other back then. Yet, for every laugh it brought tears to my eyes. I don't know how they could have made this movie any better.
Maybe I wasn't bored by any of it because the story, at it's heart (and it has a lot of it), was not about the horse. He was simply a catalyst. Red's (Tobey's) narration summed it up best. People thought that they had come together to heal a horse when, in fact, the horse had helped to heal all of them. :)
